    What is Acupuncture?

Many people know that acupuncture is the insertion of extremely fine needles into specific points on the body to create changes in your physical and emotional body.

But acupuncture medicine is more than just needles!

Your acupuncture treatment may consist of any combination of the following techniques

Acupuncture: whisker thin needles are inserted at specific points on your body depending on your current symptoms.  Once the needles have been inserted, most people experience a deep relaxation (or even sleep) and rest while the needles do their work - anywhere from 15-45 minutes.

After a treatment most people feel relaxed, refreshed and lighter.

Frequently people notice an immediate difference in their pain, anxiety, energy, mood, &/or sleep.  For some people, their symptoms change within 24 hours of a treatment.  Depending on how long you've been struggling with symptoms, it might take a few treatments before you notice significant changes.

Acupressure/Tui na: acupressure and tui na are types of medical massage to create changes in your health.  I often tell people that I don't do feel good massage, I do feel better massage.  That's not to say that some people don't think it feels good, but the ultimate goal is to make sure that you'll enjoy improved health and well-being - your symptoms will improve.

E-stim/electrical stimulation: this is a very small electrical current that is attached to the handles of acupuncture needles to achieve pain-relief through stimulation of nerves, increase blood supply to an area of the body, reduce inflammation, and stimulates your body's healing capacity.  Please note, if you have a history of seizures, stroke, pacemaker, or are early in pregnancy, electroacupuncture is not the right treatment for you.

Chinese herbal medicine: using formulations of herbs to treat internal medical conditions as well as pain and emotional complaints.  Formulas are available as pills or in freeze-dried granules that are reconstituted in boiling water and drunk as a medicinal tea.  Herbal formulas help reinforce what your acupuncture treatment has accomplished, promoting a faster healing process.

Gua sha: translates into English as "scraping".  Using a tool (historically, a soup spoon) to scrape along an area of congestion &/or pain, gua sha increases blood and oxygenation to detoxify, release tension and promote healing.  This technique can leave reddish/purple markings similar to a bruise, however, they don't hurt and can take a few to several days to resolve.  Gua sha provides profound changes in tight, painful muscles &/or connective tissue.

Cupping: using suction, cups are placed on areas of congestion to treat muscle tension and pain in addition to addressing respiratory issues.  Similar to gua sha, this technique can leave reddish/purple "bruising" that is painless and leaves muscles feeling looser, decreases inflammation, and reduces or eliminates pain.
